What Is Copyright?

Copyright is a form of protection provided by the laws of the United States (title 17, U.S.Code) to the authors of “original works of authorship,” including literary, dramatic, musical, artistic, and certain other intellectual works. This protection is available to both published and unpublished works.

Even if you can use images for free, most images require that you credit the copyright holder or the website where you got the image from. Here are some sites to get you started:

Open Content from the Getty Museum
The Getty makes available, without charge, more than 100,000 digital images to which the Getty holds the rights or that are in the public domain to be used for any purpose. No permission is required. Make sure it says "Open Content" and always credit the source.

A list of sources that provide images for a wide range of uses, including academic and scholarly use, with a focus on images suitable for publication. Look for the words "public domain" in the description to find images with unrestricted use.
