The US Census Bureau produces may useful statistical series for industries and is a great source for  population, housing, economic, and geographic data. Check out Quick Facts and County Business Patterns for data on competition.  

Census Business Builder: Small Business Edition

The Census Business Builder (CBB) is a suite of services that provides selected demographic and economic data from the Census Bureau to help entrepreneurs start a new business or expand an existing one.  Small Business Edition is built primarily for small business owners who need key data for their business plan or to better understand their potential market. It presents data for a single type of business and geography at a time.  See tips on how to use this database.

Data.Census.Gov -- U.S. Census Bureau

This is the site that replaces American FactFinder.  Through its search bar, you can locate information about consumers, places, industries, etc. From the main search bar, enter the city name, county name or zip code you wish to explore.

Consumer Expenditure Survey

From the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, this site provides information on the buying habits of American consumers.
