Visiting artists are invited to talk about how their work fits within the history of activist art and is relevant to today's students, and hold art making workshops with CCSF students.
This ongoing series began in 2021 in conjunction with the loan of Diego Rivera's Pan American Unity mural to SFMOMA, currently on display in the Roberts Family Gallery.
Diego Rivera and the Mexican Muralists used visual art as a way to convey political ideas, give historical context to contemporary social justice movements, and draw viewers in with beautifully crafted, emotionally charged images. Their legacy continues today, and can be seen in activist art across the world, in the art of the Black Lives Matter movement, the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s and 1970s, and anywhere a social justice cause uses visual imagery to get their message to the people.
