Fine Free Pilot at the CCSF Libraries

by CCSF Librarian Megan on 2024-09-23T14:02:09-07:00 | 0 Comments

Many public libraries have gone fine free! Inspired by this shift in library culture, academic libraries have been exploring how to do this with the unique types of items we loan that are not available at most public libraries (such as textbooks and technology). Still, we understand the importance of supporting student success, and we are giving it a go in the CCSF Libraries!

How does it work?

Effective August 19th, 2024, CCSF Library and Learning Resources began a pilot to eliminate overdue fines for all library item check-outs.

  • Borrowers are responsible for returning materials on time.
  • Patrons with overdue and lost items on their library account will encounter replacement fees and limits on what they can borrow.

What we need from you

  • Many students rely on the CCSF libraries collection of textbooks and technology. These items are limited in number and the library facilitates the sharing of these among many students. This enables many to complete their course work, but it relies upon patrons being responsible borrowers. While we do not charge late fees, we need items returned on time to make the material available to the next student.

Item limits

  • If two or more items on an account are overdue, checkouts for additional textbooks will be limited (until the items are returned).

Lost items

  • If an item is marked as “Lost”, a replacement fee will be added to your account.
    • "Circulating" books will be marked “Lost” 28 days after checkout.
    • "Course reserve" books will be marked “Lost” 7 days after checkout.
  • If you have more than $20 in lost fees, you won’t be able to check out any library items.
